Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday sacked his defence minister Yoav Gallant, saying that “significant gaps” had emerged between them over the management of the war.

Netanyahu’s decision, which is due to take effect within 48 hours, follows months of increasingly public feuding between the two men and comes as Israel is in the middle of a multi-front conflict with foes including Hamas, Hizbollah and Iran.

“In the midst of a war, more than ever, full trust is required between the prime minister and the defence minister,” Netanyahu said in a statement issued by his office.

“Unfortunately, although in the first months of the campaign there was such trust and there was very fruitful work, over the past few months this trust has cracked between me and the defence minister.”

Gallant’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
