BBC Breakfast star Charlie Stayt and his wife Anne Breckell have avoided bankruptcy after paying off £190,000 worth of tax bills.

It was reported last month the presenter, 62, was facing bankruptcy alongside his wife after the pair were served a petition by HMRC.

According to Metro, a judge said on Monday during a hearing that Stayt and Breckell owed “£191,000-odd” to HM Revenue & Customs, with “£32,000-odd” yet to be paid.

HMRC filed a bankruptcy petition against the couple but asked for it to be withdrawn at the hearing.

The publication reports that solicitor Anam Rezvi said: “HMRC would like to seek permission to withdraw today, as the balance has now been reduced and the remaining balance has agreed to be paid by the debtors.”

It had been claimed the department served the petition last month over Stayt’s TV and broadcasting firm, Stayt Limited.

The couple, who have been married for 30 years, live in a £2.3million four-bedroom home in Twickenham, South West London.

Stayt Limited lists both Stayt and Breckell as directors alongside Hogbens Dunphy Secretaries, accountants and tax consultants based in central London.

As of July 2023, Charlie is said to earn between £190k and £194,999 a year for his presenting role on the BBC, while co-star Naga Munchetty takes home between £335,000 and £339,999 each year.
