Bayern Munich have opened talks with the agent of Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes ahead of a potential summer transfer, according to reports from Portugal.

New Bayern boss Vincent Kompany is eager to add to his squad, with the German club having endured a rare campaign without a trophy, despite Harry Kane‘s impressive goal scoring record since his arrival.

It has already proven a summer of big changes at the Allianz Arena, with Kompany’s appointment as Bayern manager confirmed this week to replace former boss, Thomas Tuchel, who Bayern had attempted to persuade to stay at the club.

Now, though, reports from Portuguese outlet O Jogo have claimed that the Bavarian titans have approached Fernandes’ agent, Miguel Pinho, over what would be a sensational move for the United skipper.

Although Bayern are reportedly targeting Fernandes, they may have to act quickly, with Barcelona also interested in signing him as per the reports.

Fernandes’ future at United is uncertain, especially given that it isn’t clear whether manager Erik ten Hag will remain in charge.

Last month Fernandes wrote in The Players’ Tribune that he wants to stay at United.

He wrote: ‘I love to step out at Old Trafford more than anything in the world. I don’t want to leave. This has always been my ultimate dream.

‘I just want my expectations to fit with the expectations of the club. If you go talk to any fan, they will tell you the same thing. We want to compete for the league. We want to be playing Champions League football. We want to be in cup finals. That is the standard. That is what I want. That is what you all deserve.

‘I just want to keep fighting. I want to be here. My family wants to be here.’

Fernandes’ current contract runs out in June 2026, but United have a 12-month option. The Portugal international earns £240,000-a-week.

The 29-year-old featured as United beat rivals Manchester City 2-1 in the FA Cup final. It was the second trophy he has won with the club following on from the Carabao Cup last year.

Since signing for United in January 2020, Fernandes has made 233 appearances, while he has scored 79 goals and has provided 66 assists.

Barcelona, now managed by Hansi Flick, are also interested in Fernandes as they look to strengthen their midfield.

If United were to lose Fernandes then it would be a significant blow, especially given that they are looking to rebuild.

Although they won the FA Cup, there were still many difficulties for United this season as they finished in eighth place in the Premier League and exited the Champions League in the group stages.

United’s budget for the summer transfer window is only just over £35million in cash, but the club’s co-owners INEOS are looking to raise more funds by selling players.

United are exploring the possibility of signing Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi, who is valued at £65million.
