Saltburn and The Banshees of Inisherin star Barry Keoghan has joined the cast of the upcoming Peaky Blinders film.

The film will see Oscar-winner Cillian Murphy return as gangster Thomas Shelby on the lawless streets of early 20th century Birmingham and will also see the show’s creator Steven Knight and Tom Harper, who directed episodes in the first season in 2013, back behind the camera.

Netflix and BBC Films announced last June that the feature film had been greenlit and would go into production later this year. However, further details of casting and plot have been kept tightly under wraps.

Speaking about reprising the role of Shelby, Cork star Murphy, who is one of the film’s producers, said, “It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me . . . It is very gratifying to be re-collaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is one for the fans.”

Oppenheimer star Murphy played the calculating Tommy Shelby for six seasons between 2013 and 2022.

Knight has previously said that the film will be an “explosive chapter” in the story with “no holds barred.

The original series followed the Shelby family, a crime gang rising to prominence in post-First World War Birmingham.

Knight previously confirmed the cast are set to begin filming in Birmingham in September, and the film will follow the family into the Second World War.

Murphy won legions of fans for his performance as a member of the notorious Shelby family, before he dominated the awards season earlier this year for his starring role in Oppenheimer.
