An airport baggage handler has advised passengers to avoid using ribbons on their suitcases while travelling. Often chosen by travellers to help spot their luggage easily on busy carousels, ribbons can actually lead to complications, according to the baggage assistant.
They explained that these identifiers might cause bags to miss flights due to issues in the automated scanning process in the baggage hall.
The handler stated: “Ribbons people tie onto their suitcases to help identify them can cause issues with the bag being scanned in the baggage hall. If the bag can’t be scanned automatically it can end up in manual processing, which could mean your bag doesn’t make it to the flight. Take old stickers off the bag, it can cause confusion with the scanning process.”
Moreover, the handler warned about the unexpected risk of packing marzipan, which resembles the density of explosives and could result in both the luggage and its owner being removed from the flight, as reported by the Mirror.
This advice comes at a crucial time as many UK travellers are not yet aware of upcoming changes in airport security. According to a travel expert earlier this month, four out of five people are still uninformed about new scanners that will be implemented in major UK airports this June, reports the Daily Record.
These advanced scanners will permit passengers to carry up to two litres of liquid in hand luggage and keep items like laptops inside their bags during security checks.
Aberdeen Airport is participating in the new liquid rule changes, however other Scottish airports like Glasgow and Edinburgh missed the June 1 deadline. The inconsistency among airports has left passengers confused.
According to an AirAdvisor survey shared exclusively with Mirror, 83 percent of the public remained unaware of the upcoming amendments to the 100ml liquid regulations due to roll out this summer.
Under the revamped rules, holidaymakers will be allowed to carry two litres of liquids in their hand luggage for UK airport departures. However, these changes are not applicable to all locations and return flights to the UK may still operate under previous guidelines.
Current rules, remaining in place until at least June 1st, limit passengers to carrying less than 100ml of liquids in their carry-on luggage, which must be sealed in a one litre bag measuring 20cm x 20cm.
Commenting on the matter, AirAdvisor’s Founder and CEO, Anton Radchenko, stated: “Considering this rule holds significant importance and will redefine how we travel, people should be aware of it.”
