Police have launched an attempted murder investigation and arrested the baby girl’s mother, who they found in the flat on the third floor alongside another child.

The second child, reportedly a boy, was taken into care by the local youth welfare office.

It is unclear whether the mother locked her daughter in the cat box and threw her out of the window. The father’s whereabouts are not currently known.

Investigators did not publish any information on the mother’s age or her social background.

Berlin police spokeswoman Anja Dierschke confirmed that the 3rd Homicide Squad has taken over the investigation into the case.

Prosecutors are expected to decide on Tuesday whether the mother will have to appear in front of a judge.
