Avanti issues ‘do not travel’ warning and begs passengers ‘please’

Avanti has issued a “do not travel” after a freight train derailed on a major route between England and Scotland. Services are being cancelled and delayed because of the incident on the West Coast Main Line between Carlisle and Oxenholme Lake District on Wednesday night.

Avanti West Coast wrote on X: “Do Not Travel north of Preston. Services between between Oxenholme Lake District and Penrith have been cancelled due to a freight train derailment blocking the line. Please do not attempt to travel with us between Preston and Scotland today.




“Customers with tickets dated yesterday, Wednesday, 29 May and today Thursday, May 30 can use their Avanti West Coast tickets tomorrow, Friday 31 May, at any time via the same route.” It added: “Ticket acceptance is in place with: @LNER between Edinburgh and London Kings Cross. @CrossCountryUK between Edinburgh and Birmingham New Street.

“@TPEassist via any reasonable route. @ScotRail between Glasgow and Edinburgh. All in both directions until further notice.” It went on: “e haven’t given a time as to when this disruption is likely to end. We have issued do not travel advice to customers, with their ticket valid for travel tomorrow.”

London North Eastern Railway are conveying passengers between Edinburgh and London Kings Cross in both directions until further notice. Arrangements have been made for Avanti West Coast rail tickets to be accepted for these journeys. Transpennine Trains are conveying passengers via any reasonable route until further notice. Arrangements have been made for Avanti West Coast rail tickets to be accepted for these journeys.

CrossCountry are conveying passengers between Edinburgh and Birmingham New Street in both directions until further notice. Arrangements have been made for Avanti West Coast rail tickets to be accepted for these journeys. ScotRail are conveying passengers via any reasonable route until further notice.
