The Wicked press tour hasn’t technically kicked off yet, but Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande are already getting into character.
The musical theater duo—who will be playing Elphaba and Glinda, respectively, in the forthcoming Jon M. Chu film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical—have landed in Paris ahead of today’s opening ceremony for the 2024 Olympics. And they made sure their grand arrival in the City of Light paid homage to their onscreen characters.
The two coordinated in different ’50s-esque evening gowns. Erivo nodded to Elphaba in a strapless emerald-green gown featuring a sweetheart neckline and a structured skirt that flared out from the waist. She matched other elements of her outfit to the dress, including a dramatic wide-brim hat and classic satin pumps, then kicked it up a notch with an array of glittery accessories like drop earrings, gold bracelets, and chunky rings.
Grande looked elegant in a full Thom Browne ensemble, consisting of a sleeveless drop-waist dress made of a powdery pink fabric. Adorning the waist was a neatly tied bow, akin to similar bows fastened at the back of her head. She finished off the look with a pair of mid-length white gloves and pink and white pumps.
The two stars have displayed a tendency to channel their Wicked characters for joint public appearances. In February, they attended the Super Bowl together, showing up at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas dressed in matching bedazzled pink and green jerseys. The jerseys also happened to spell out the names “Elphaba” and “Glinda” across the back.
