Apple is set to bring a bunch of Apple Intelligence features next week, and ahead of the roll out, Craig Federighi, senior vice president of software engineering has provided an insight on how the upcoming AI tools are different from those present in other smartphones.
As per an interview with Wall Street Journal, Federighi first touched on why Apple is late to the party.
“This is a big lift. You could put something out there and have it be sort of a mess. Apple’s point of view is more like, ‘Let’s try to get each piece right and release it when it’s ready,’” he said, adding that the company is prioritising privacy and responsibility with AI features.
Clean Up photos tool in Apple Intelligence
He emphasised that while Apple Intelligence will let users create images and emojis with a text prompt, it will also help them remove unwanted objects from photos using the Clean Up tool in the Photos app. It works like the Magic Eraser AI tool by Google – select Clean Up in the Photos app, tap the objects or people that need to be removed, and Apple Intelligence does its magic.
As per the report, while several generative-AI image tools let users generate new parts of a photo, Apple doesn’t and it is intentional.
“People view photographic content as something they can rely on as indicative of reality,” Federighi said, adding, “It’s important to us that we help purvey accurate information, not fantasy.”
“Do we want to make it easy to remove that water bottle, or that mic? Because that water bottle was there when you took the photo,” Federighi said.
“The demand for people to want to clean up what seem like extraneous details to the photo that don’t fundamentally change the meaning of what happened has been very very high, so we’ve been willing to take that small step,” he added.
On Smarter Siri, Federighi said, “Siri is adopting that in stages and will benefit in stages over the coming year.”
