Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon didn’t hesitate to show his appreciation for Elliot Anderson following the latter’s confirmed transfer to Nottingham Forest.
In a flurry of activity on Sunday, Newcastle managed to finalize two player sales just in time to comply with the profit and sustainability regulations (PSR), sending Yankuba Minteh off to Brighton after his successful loan spell at Feyenoord, alongside Anderson’s departure.
Parting ways with Newcastle marks a significant moment for 21-year-old Anderson, who has been with the club since he was eight. The attacking midfielder made 55 appearances for the Magpies and took to social media to express his feelings about the move.

He shared a heartfelt video that captured his journey through the Newcastle ranks, captioning it: “It’s been a dream come true to represent my club for 14 years. Pulling that black and white shirt on at St James’ Park is a moment that will never be taken away from me.
“I would like to thank everyone involved with the club and all the Geordies that have supported me throughout my journey. I will always support the club and wish nothing but the best for everyone involved. As one door closes another one opens. Thank you NUFC.”
The £35m fee fetched for Anderson ties him as the club’s highest-ever sale, a record he now shares with Andy Carroll, who made his own high-profile move to Liverpool back in January 2011. The Reds found themselves tangentially embroiled in Newcastle’s recent PSR saga, learning that they could snap up Newcastle’s winger Gordon, but with a catch: they’d have to part ways with their own centre-back Jarell Quansah in a swap deal.
Liverpool holds Gordon in high regard, yet the prospect of losing Quansah, who shone last season and is now an integral part of the first-team setup, was not an option they were willing to entertain. Gordon, who watched from the bench as England clinched a 2-1 victory over Slovakia in extra-time at Euro 2024 on Sunday, didn’t waste time responding to Anderson’s social media post, leaving the comment: “Gunna miss you lad.”
New Forest recruit Anderson shared his excitement on the club’s official website, saying: “I’m buzzing. I think it’s a massive club with big history and I can’t wait to get started.”
He added, “It’s the club and the city. I’ve always been very fond of Nottingham Forest and I think it’s a great place to display what I can do and go onto try and help my career.”
