Former Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera was filmed arguing with a fan who heckled him over his transfer decision.

The Spaniard penned a new one-year deal with La Liga side Athletic Club Bilbao on Thursday, seemingly opting against returning to his first club, Real Zaragoza.

Zaragoza handed Bilbao-born Herrera his big break in football and spent two years in the first team after graduating from the club’s academy.

He went on to join Athletic Club in 2011 before securing a switch to Manchester United three years later and then signing for Paris Saint-Germain in 2019.

Herrera headed back to Bilbao in 2022 but always promised to return to Zaragoza before the end of his playing days.

With his contract set to expire, many believed it was the right time for the 34-year-old to return to La Romareda, but Herrera had other plans.

He put an end to speculation by continuing his Athletic Club adventure, a decision that did not go down well with one Zaragoza fan who went on to film a tense exchange between them.

Herrera was out socialising with friends when he was interrupted by the fan who said: “What kind of Zaragozista are you?”

The midfielder immediately got out of his seat and approached the fan before saying: “What’s wrong with you?”

After a short but aggressive exchange between the pair, Herrera chased the fan down the street after taking exception to what had been said to him.

The fan continued to film the incident which was later posted on social media.

Following the incident, Herrera’s wife Isabel Collado took to Instagram and blamed Real Zaragoza for not doing enough to sign Herrera.

Collado wrote: “A year waiting for a call, a visit, a project, a little affection… You stay where they have shown you.”

Despite Zaragoza playing in the Spanish second tier, Collado hinted that Herrera was willing to drop a division to play for the club again but the club didn’t do enough to recruit the star.

Herrera played a bit-part role in helping Athletic Club claim a fifth-placed La Liga finish resulting in qualification for the Europa League.

He made just ten appearances for the club this season and was a substitute in April’s historic Copa del Rey final victory over Real Mallorca.
