Spanish royals ignore latest affair rumours as they put on united front

King Felipe and Queen Letizia looked on proudly today as their daughter and heir Princess Leonor officially became a junior army officer.

The Spanish Royal Family travelled to Zaragoza in the north of the country for the ceremony, with the King also handing out new appointments at the General Military Academy.

This comes following the latest explosive claims from Letizia’s former brother-in-law Jaime Del Burgo, who has made sensational claims that he and the Queen had an affair after her marriage.

In an interview with Argentinian newspaper Clarín Mr Del Burgo alleged that he and Letizia are still in touch, despite him now being divorced from her sister Telma, whom he was married to from 2012-2014.

He said: “We have shared many years of our lives together. We have been a family. As I have always said, ours was not a relationship of lovers. The lover would be him, in any case. I mean Felipe.”

Letizia and Mr Del Burgo did date for a time when she was still working as a journalist before she met and married the heir to the Spanish throne.

She and Felipe now have two daughters together – Princess Leonor, 18, who is set to succeed her father, and her younger sister Infanta Sofía, 17.

Leonor began her military training less than a year ago at the Zaragoza Military Academy, the same institution where Felipe himself trained from 1985-1988.

During the ceremony, the Spanish monarch presented his daughter with a badge, which he attached to her uniform as she proudly saluted him.

He then placed a hand on her shoulder in a touching gesture of support, while Letizia could not contain her pride and hugged Leonor while Sofía looked on.

The Princess has to complete three years of training at the military academy before moving on to the General Air Academy and has already completed a module helping her to adapt to royal life.

The last few months have been tumultuous for the Spanish royals with the publication of Jaime Penafiel’s book detailing Letizia’s alleged affair with Jaime Del Burgo.

According to Mr Del Burgo, the pair began their romance began in Venice years before she met her now-husband, breaking the news to him in 2002 that she had met someone and their relationship would require her to stop working.

He even claimed that he had handled Letizia’s pre-nuptial agreement and that she met with him the night before their wedding to tell him not to leave her.
