Holiday warning as ‘three’ countries put on emergency travel ‘alert’

Every year, Brits flock to Spain, Portugal and Greece in droves, drawn by the promise of stunning beaches, mouth-watering food and glorious sunshine. However, with temperatures predicted to skyrocket across these popular holiday destinations in the coming days, UK tourists are being advised to take extra precautions.

AccuWeather has issued yellow and orange “extreme weather warnings” for all three countries over the next few days.




In Spain, areas including Valle del Tajo, Villuercas y Montanchez, Barros y Serena, Sur de Badajoz, Vegas del Guadiana, Aracena, Andevalo y Condado, Litoral de Huelva, Campina Gaditana, Vega del Segura, Menorca and Ampurdan have all been given a yellow weather warning.

The State Meteorological Agency has also issued a “Yellow Warning for Extreme High Temperature in effect from Wednesday, 1pm CEST until Thursday, 9pm CEST”. The weather warning for Campina Gaditana and Vega del Segura will remain in place until Wednesday 9pm CEST.

Meanwhile, Morena y Condado, Valle del Guadalquivir de Jaen, Campina Cordobesa and Campina Sevillana have been issued an orange weather warning for the same period. “Summer will be much warmer than usual,” Jesus Riesco, the director of Aemet’s Meteorological Centre in Malaga, told La Opinion de Malaga.

He further stated that there’s a more than 70 per cent likelihood that this summer will rank among the top 20 per cent of the hottest on record. The Met Office has forecasted that temperatures in Madrid and Zaragoza could reach up to 36C this week, while Seville could experience scorching highs of up to 41C.

Seville is set to bask in temperatures of 40C tomorrow, Wednesday, July 3, and a blistering 41C on Thursday, July 4. A yellow warning has also been issued for certain regions of Portugal, including Portalegre, Evora and Beja.

The Portuguese Institute for the Sea and the Atmosphere has issued a Yellow Warning for Extreme High Temperatures, which will remain in effect until Thursday, 7pm WEST. Brits holidaying in Greece have also been warned about the soaring temperatures, with both yellow and orange warnings in place.
