22-year old Sonay Kartal will start the day’s play on No3 Court against France’s Clara Burel. The Londoner made it to SW19 as a qualifier, and beat 29th seed Sorana Cirtsea of Romania 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 in her first round match.
Later on the same court Yuriko Lily Miyazaki faces a very tough test against 14th seed and 2022 French Open semi-finalist Daria Kasatkina.
It is currently still raining, so the outside courts remain covered. Play is due to get underway on No1 Court at 1pm, where US Open champion and second seed Coco Gauff faces Romanian qualifier Anca Todoni.
• Jack Draper’s performance evoked memories of Andy Murray yesterday, as he battled to a five-set victory over Sweden’s Elias Ymer on Centre Court. The Brit, seeded 28th, returned to Wimbledon after missing the tournament last year through injury, and will now face compatriot Cameron Norrie in the second round; the man he replaced as British No1 last month.
• Defending women’s singles champion Marketa Vondrousova suffered a shock first-round defeat to Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, the world No83. Vondrousova is the first women’s defending champion in 30 years to lose in the first round
• Novak Djokovic was victorious on his return from knee surgery. The Serbian had an operation on a torn medial meniscus on June 5, but cruised through 6-1 6-2 6-2 against Vit Kopriva. The seven-times Wimbledon champion will play British wildcard Jacob Fearnley in the next round
• There will be another all-British clash in the second round after Katie Boulter battled through against Tatjana Maria to set up a meeting with Harriet Dart
Rain delays on outer courts
Not great weather in SW19 so far, so no play on the outside courts as of yet.
There is only one Brit in action on the main courts today, with Emma Raducanu on No1 Court to face Belgium’s Elise Mertens.
World No1 Jannik Sinner will face compatriot Matteo Berrettini on Centre Court, with defending Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz in action on No1 Court against Australian Aleksandar Vukic.
Stuart Fraser writes I am sitting here this morning feeling a little bemused as I read through the order of play at Wimbledon. Emma Raducanu’s second-round match against Elise Mertens has been scheduled on No 1 court rather than Centre Court.
In the third slot of the day, this is clearly the match that is being geared up as the BBC’s prime time offering. Why the schedulers do not feel it should be on the All England Club’s main stadium court is beyond me.
Jannik Sinner vs Matteo Berrettini and Naomi Osaka vs Emma Navarro are two reasonable picks for Centre Court. But why not have Britain’s only active female grand slam champion on there instead of Daniil Medvedev vs Alexandre Muller?
Frankly, if you did a vote of match preferences for the 15,000 ticketholders on Centre Court today, Raducanu would be leading the way much in line with Labour’s dominance in the general election polls.
