And it could get worse for England who could receive further punishment for the behaviour of fans in the aftermath of the game.

Fans were left frustrated after the game ended in a goalless draw leading to objects being thrown onto the pitch at the final whistle.

England’s tepid display saw fans vent their frustration when the players headed over to thank them for their support.

But it was the emergence of boss Gareth Southgate that appeared to crank the frustrations up another level which saw some launch plastic cups in his direction coupled with a chorus of boos.

“I understand the reactions but it is a tough environment,” Southgate told ITV. “We tried to win the game by the changes we made. We put attacking players on the pitch.”

He added: “I understand the narrative towards me. That’s better for the team than it being towards them. But it’s creating an unusual environment to operate in. I’ve not seen any other team qualify and receive similar.”

The throwing of objects onto the pitch could land the FA in further hot water with UEFA who have already issued sanctions to four other nations at the tournament for similar offences.

Scotland, Albania, Serbia and Croatia have all been punished for fans throwing objects onto the pitch.

Albania were hit with a hefty €12,375 fine for throwing objects during their opening match against Italy.

Meanwhile, Jude Bellingham is awaiting the verdict of a UEFA investigation into a gesture he made after scoring a late equaliser against Slovakia on Sunday.

Bellingham appeared to make a gesture by grabbing his crotch which some initially claimed was aimed at the Slovakian bench after his stunning added time strike.

The 21-year-old was quick to set the record straight claiming on social media that it was a joke between him and close friends.

If he is found to have breached the rules, Bellingham could face a suspension or a fine.
