Revolutionary electric car battery can charge EVs in less than five minutes and last 600,000 miles

Electric vehicle owners could soon benefit from revolutionary technology that would allow them to charge their vehicles in just five minutes, which could quell any fears about battery range.

New technology from Nyobolt has shown its electric vehicle batteries can charge from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in under five minutes with a 350kW DC charger.


This is twice the speed of the fastest-charging vehicles on the road, but crucially without the degradation rate typically associated with lithium-ion batteries.

The Nyobolt batteries are longer lasting, more sustainable and can achieve over 4,000 fast charge cycles, or 600,000 miles, while also maintaining over 80 per cent battery capacity retention.

The ultra-fast charging batteries have been developed by Nyobolt and British engineering team CALLUM, with testing taking place in a high-performance environment.

Testing showed that the 50Ah 35kWh battery can be charged from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in four minutes and 37 seconds.

A full 100 per cent charge would enable the Nyobolt EV prototype to achieve a range of 155 WLTP miles – an impressive fear given the battery charging speeds.

Dr Sai Shivareddy, co-founder and CEO of Nyobolt, said: “Despite some OEMs showing fast charge times in the region of 15 minutes, a closer inspection reveals the charge is usually across a limited SOC region specifically chosen to limit the amount of life taken out of the cell; for instance, between 20-80 per cent.

“Typically, the charge profile will only hold these peak charge levels for a short amount of the charge time.

“Nyobolt’s low impedance cells ensure we can offer sustainability, stretching out the battery’s usable life for up to 600,000 miles in the case of our technology demonstrator.”

Pledges from Nyobolt could see low-volume production of the batteries begin within months, potentially reaching 1,000 packs in 2025, while the flexible manufacturing model enables volumes of up to two million cells per year.

Cambridge-based Nyobolt makes the battery technology through “next-generation patented carbon and metal oxide anode materials, innovative low-impedance cell design, integrated power electronics and software controls”.

Shivareddy continued, saying: “Our extensive research here in the UK and US has unlocked a novel battery technology that is ready and scalable right now

“We are enabling the electrification of new products and services currently considered inviable or impossible.

“Creating real-world demonstrators, such as the Nyobolt EV, underlines both our readiness and commitment to making the industries see change is possible.”

Many in the EV industry are hoping that this technological advancement could help motorists have more faith in electric vehicles by having the reassurance that their battery will not run out of charge when they are not close to an EV charger.
