Weekly poll: will you buy the Motorola Razr 50 or Razr 50 Ultra?

Must read

Motorola unveiled the Razr 50 series in China and the global announcement came hours later. T-Mobile US is already hyping up its exclusive Hot Pink Razr+, while Amazon India is setting up for the local launch. Now there is just one question – will you buy one?

First, let’s meet the contenders. The Motorola Razr 50 Ultra, aka Moto razr+ 2024 in the US, builds on its predecessor with an IPX8 water resistance rating, an even larger 4” cover display, a slightly larger, faster battery (4,000mAh, 45W wired, 15W wireless), a more powerful Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chipset and camera improvements (50MP 1/1.95” main, 50MP 2x portrait camera).

The Razr 50 Ultra/razr+ 2024 (12/512GB) costs USD 1,000/CAD 1,300/EUR 1,200. Expensive, but the Honor Magic V Flip is the only one that can challenge it on cover display size and that one isn’t coming to the US. The Galaxy Z Flip6 is coming (and soon) with a larger cover display than its predecessor, but it looks like no match for the Moto. If the rumored prices prove true, the Galaxy clamshell will be even more expensive than the Razr. Check out our Motorola Razr 50 Ultra review for more details on the phone.

Weekly poll: will you buy the Motorola Razr 50 or Razr 50 Ultra?

The Motorola Razr 50, aka Moto razr 2024 in the US, is the more affordable model and it fixes a lot of the major complaints we had about the Razr 40. Starting with the cover display – the tiny line display is gone, replaced by a 3.6” panel that seems to be more or less identical to what the Razr 40 Ultra had. And it has an IPX8 rating rather than the basic water-repellent design of last year’s models.

The phone uses a Dimensity 7300X chipset, which is a moderate upgrade over the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, and the same 4,200mAh battery with 30W charging and (this time) 15W wireless charging. The 50MP main camera is the same as on the Ultra, but there’s no tele module here, just a 13MP ultra wide (on the flip side, the Ultra doesn’t have an ultra wide).

The Motorola Razr 50/razr 2024 will be available in the US at USD 700. It will launch in other regions (Europe, South America, the Middle East, Africa and the Asia Pacific), but details for that are coming at a later date.

We don’t know the actual price of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 yet or the specs (though leaks have painted a fairly complete picture). Honor has not said whether the Magic V Flip will launch internationally. The same goes for Huawei and the Pocket 2.

There are the likes of the nubia Flip and Blackview Hero 10, which might challenge the vanilla Razr 50. The nubia Flip is going global (targeting multiple markets, including the US) with a base price of $500 for an 8/256GB unit. The phone uses the SD 7 Gen 1 and a 1.43” circular cover display, making it closer to the Razr 40 instead of the 50. The main display is a 6.9” 120Hz OLED panel. The Flip has a single 50MP camera on the back and a surprisingly large 4,310mAh battery with 33W wired-only charging. Nothing stellar, but this is one of the most affordable foldables that you can find.

Its competition is the Blackview Hero 10, which targets a lower price point of €400 (around $425). However, this is a 4G phone with a Helio G99. It does have an impressive camera – a 108MP (1/1.67”) sensor in the main and an 8MP ultra wide, plus a 32MP selfie. The 4,000mAh battery with 45W charging is pretty good too.

Oppo and vivo might bring their own flips before the end of the year, but right now the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra/razr+ 2024 doesn’t have much competition. Is this the right flip foldable phone for you?

As for the Motorola Razr 50/razr 2024, it does have some competition already. But maybe the Razr 50 is the top pick for your next phone – is it?
