Kayla Jane Ross, the owner of the plus-size fashion store Indie Jane Boutique, left fans divided after she shared a list of ‘unhinged’ things people have said to her in her place of work
Shopping as a plus-sized woman can be difficult, particularly if you are a clothing size that isn’t carried in most stores.
But one woman took it upon herself to make a change for the fuller-figured fashionistas out there. Kayla Jane Ross opened her store Indie Jane Boutique, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, back in 2018.
Since then, her business has gone from strength to strength, offering her curvy clientele a more comfortable shopping experience. But it doesn’t go smoothly every time.
Kayla claims that every now and again she will greet a customer at the door and receive the most ‘unhinged’ and sometimes judgemental responses. In a video, which has gained more than 20,000 likes, she said: “You would not believe some of the things customers say when they come into our store… Here are some unhinged things customers have said to us recently.”
She claimed one customer asked: “Oh, so this store is for heavyset girls like yourself?” Another commented that the outfits were “pricier because of the extra material”.
Kayla told a third that they were in an “exclusively plus size boutique”. Kayla added: “She said okay. She looked around for about five minutes and she said, where’s the size? Small.”
“I said, we don’t carry the size small, we only carry plus sizes. And she said, ‘well, good luck with that.’.” Finally, she explained that a customer had pointed out an outfit and said it was the “ugliest dress she’d ever seen” but it was the same dress the business owner was wearing at the time.
She later added in the caption: “I mean I can’t with people most days. Customer service is a trip.”
Many Instagram users took to the comments stunned by the blunt remarks people make and replied offering her support. One user said: “Having been in retail for many years….you have my sympathy. Thank you for being plus sized!”
Another added: “I forgot people call us ‘heavy set’,” while someone else penned: “All my years working retail there’s one thing I know without a doubt, 1. People do not read. 2. People do not listen.”
A fourth user, who owns her own store, replied: “I have straight size folks walk into my shop (which says “vintage, plus sizes, & quirky decor” on the sign and say “Um, soooo do you ONLY carry plus sizes?”
“I’M SORRY, DOES IT FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE TO ENTER A SHOP THAT MIGHT NOT CARRY YOUR SIZE? Can’t imagine what that’s like.”
However, not everyone agreed with Kayla blasting them online. A critic wrote: “Was any of this post really necessary? I mean, I’m plus size, but to dot his post seems so caddy. You could have left the comments to themselves..who cares what people say or think?
“You are sounding like you need someone to approve of you or feel sorry for you. Neither of those are professional. Leave the caddy remarks where they belong, UNSAID!.”
