Impatient BMW driver reversed into OAP and broke her pelvis

Must read

An impatient BMW driver stuck in traffic reversed straight into a pensioner crossing the road and broke her pelvis.

Danny Lowe, from Birchington, had started honking his horn and edging closer to the car in front of him as he grew angry about the hold-up in Salisbury Avenue, Ramsgate.

Not happy that the jam wasn’t moving, he decided to reverse his BWW 116i along the road.

But a court heard that as he did so, the 43-year-old hit Barbara Harden who had been crossing behind him.

The pensioner’s pelvis was broken in several places and she also suffered a fracture to her arm, as well as other injuries.

Lowe, of Park Road, was later charged with causing serious injury by careless or inconsiderate driving and admitted the offence when he appeared at Margate Magistrates’ Court.

District Judge William Nelson heard the incident happened on October 17 last year and that six months later, during another incident, Lowe was banned from driving after being found over the legal alcohol limit.

Describing the events in October, Victoria Aked, prosecuting, said: “He came to a stationary vehicle in traffic and he was behind it. But he became impatient and bibbed his horn and got closer to the lead vehicle, but this wasn’t working.

“He then reversed to go around or to turn, but he hit and knocked over Barbara Harden causing her serious injuries.

“She had three pelvic fractures and one to her humerus as well as other injuries.

“It was aggressive driving, so there’s higher culpability and she was a vulnerable woman crossing the road.”

Gemma Adams, mitigating said, her client was remorseful and that she was requesting a pre-sentencing report (PSR) be carried out on him before he is sentenced.

She added: “He is remorseful that he caused the elderly lady’s injuries. He has complex mental health needs, so it makes sense [to have a PSR] before he is sentenced.”

Judge Nelson told Lowe now that he had admitted the offence, he was placing him on an interim driving ban until he is sentenced.

Ms Adams added: “He is already disqualified as he was convicted of drink-driving in April.”

The judge still placed him on the interim ban. Lowe will be sentenced at the same court on August 7 and was granted bail until then.
