Darwin Nunez insisted “this is just the beginning” after his eye-catching performance in Uruguay’s 3-1 win over Panama on Monday.
The 25-year-old sealed victory for Marcelo Bielsa’s side in their 2024 Copa America opener by striking a sweet left-footed volley in the 85th minute of the tie at the Hard Rock Stadium. For Nunez, it continues his impressive recent form on international duty, with his strike in the early hours of Monday morning his ninth in his last six outings for La Celeste.

Nunez received widespread acclaim for his performance against Panama on Monday, with Uruguayan publication EL Observador praising his role as the “leader of the attack”.
“Darwin’s performance in the first half was impressive,” added the publication. “At 11 minutes he demanded a penalty, which did not exist. At 17 minutes, after clearing two marks, he finished from outside the area and Orlando Mosquera prevented the goal from falling.
“At 28 minutes a goal was lost in a one-on-one with the goalkeeper. He went to all of them. He assumed the role of leader of the attack. At 84 minutes he scored the goal and had the reward that he deserved so much throughout the game. He made it 2-0.”
