A former Manchester United star has reportedly been offered a role as part of the club’s backroom staff.

After Sir Jim Ratcliffe took over footballing operations at United Erik ten Hag‘s future at the club appeared increasingly tenuous, particularly given a dismal run of form towards the end of the season.

However, Ineos ultimately opted to stick with the Dutchman – with their FA Cup win over rivals Man City reportedly tipping the scales in his favour.

As Ten Hag looks ahead to his third season at Old Trafford, he is reportedly intent on bringing in his compatriot to serve on the coaching staff for the coming campaign.

According to a report from Fabrizio Romano, United have approached Ruud van Nistelrooy regarding a role at the club.

Ruud van Nistelrooy is said to be weighing up his options, with the ex-striker also in contention to be the new Burnley manager

Reports from earlier this week claim that the 47-year-old is also a top target to take the vacant managerial job at Burnley, with the former striker set to make a decision on his future in the coming days.

After impressing in his native Netherlands, Van Nistelrooy joined United in 2001 – one year after a knee injury had postponed his initial move to the Premier League.

With a ruthless efficiency in front of goal, the Dutchman would quickly endear himself to United fans, netting 150 goals in all competitions in just five seasons at the club.

A recurring knee injury reared its ugly head again in the Spanish capital, but not before Van Nistelrooy picked up two La Liga titles.

Brief spells with Hamburg and Malaga would follow before he hung up his boots at the end of the 2011-12 season.

Since then Van Nistelrooy has moved into coaching, serving as an assistant to the likes of Guus Hiddink and Ronald Koeman with the national team whilst coaching the academy sides of his former club PSV.

Van Nistelrooy netted 150 goals in 219 appearances during his five years at Old Trafford

In March 2022 he took charge of the PSV first team before leaving at the end of the following season despite successes in the KVNB Cup and the Johan Cruyff Shield.

Manchester United declined to comment.
