Peter Golding, managing director at FleetCheck, said: “These systems can be overridden but the driver has to make a conscious effort to do so, and fleets should make it clear that will not be tolerated.
“While this technology is not perfect, it will provide valuable guidance to drivers on the road in real-time. They will almost always know when they are exceeding the speed limit.
“We are almost certainly moving into an era when there should be something approaching zero tolerance for speeding.”
Intelligent Speed Assist technology uses special sign-recognition cameras and GPS speed limit data to work out local restrictions.
The technology can quickly advise drivers of the current speed limit and issue a warning if they are exceeding it.
The tools can be switched off but will reactivate when the engine is switched off making it almost impossible to properly remove.
Golding stressed there would be “some pushback” from motorists about the new technology but added the new tools should instead be welcomed.
The tool is likely to boost road safety and could also help motorists avoid being slapped with hefty speeding fines.
Drivers caught above the legal limits could be slapped with a £100 fine and three penalty points on their driving licence.
Golding added: “There will no doubt be some pushback about this from some drivers who feel this kind of technology is invasive or annoying, but it is difficult to argue with the positive safety impact, and ISA’s introduction is very much something that should be welcomed by fleets and relayed to drivers as a positive step that will help to protect them on the road.”
