Man dies and another rescued in Teelin Bay diving tragedy

One man, aged in his 40s, drowned in a tragic diving incident in Teelin Bay on Saturday.

Another man, who is in his 60s, was rescued from the water and is receiving treatment at University Hospital, Galway.

Late on Saturday morning, Teelin Pier was closed to the public and a multi-agency operation was launched at around 12.30pm.

Two men were recovered from the water.

One of these males, a man in his 40s, was later pronounced dead at the scene.

The local coroner, Dr Denis McCauley, has been notified and a post-mortem will take place in the coming days.

The second man, who is aged in his 60s, is receiving treatment in hospital in Galway.

The incident occurred at around 12.30pm.

The Coast Guard’s 118 Rescue helicopter, based at Strandhill in Sligo, was dispatched to the scene.

A crew from the Killybegs Coast Guard also attended in their Delta RIB after being tasked by the Malin Head Coast Guard, who coordinated the operation.

Local gardai and other emergency services assisted.

A large crowd of divers, estimated to be over 100 and drawn from all over the country, were in the area for the North West Dive Rally.
