Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson played the role of the Doctor and his companion Ruby Sunday throughout the latest series but fans were left insisting the finale was “abysmal” as it failed to live up to its high expectations.

One of the main plot lines of the final episode of the series surrounded the origins of orphan Ruby.

She had been on a bid to find out just who her parents were with many subtle hints dropped throughout the series.

It left fans expecting a grand reveal with many expecting a face of Doctor Who‘s past to turn out to be Ruby’s mother.

However, many were left bitterly disappointed when it was revealed that Ruby’s mum was a random woman who had never been a part of the show before.

The flat finale saw an emotional reunion between Ruby and her mum but it held little relevance to the rest of the series.

It didn’t take long before fans began to erupt into fury as they hit out at the programme in rage.

Speaking out on the anticlimactic final, one fed-up fan said: “I love Millie Gibson, I love Ruby Sunday, I love Ncuti Gatwa and I will always love Doctor Who… but that series finale was so disappointing, I’m honestly gutted.”

Another went on to add: “Well the Doctor Who finale was abysmal, seemed a bit rushed? And the way they tied up Ruby’s story was just WEAK.”

A third then fumed: “This series had some really strong episodes and I definitely haven’t been as critical of it as some, but that ending was indefensible.

“Just abysmal. Many episodes will be worth a rewatch but dear God, what the hell went wrong?”

The backlash continued to roll in with another echoing the “abysmal” sentiment as they penned: “Unfortunately, Empire Of Death does not improve upon second viewing.

“I actually now think that was quite abysmal. The material is so far beneath the lead cast. Doctor Who Season One didn’t deserve to end on a whimper.”

Before another chimed in to add: “The Doctor Who finale was so abysmal I think I might cry.”

Whilst Millie’s character Ruby appeared to bid an emotional goodbye to the Doctor at the end of the episode, fans know that she will be back for the next series.

She is expected to appear in the first half of the show’s next edition before being replaced by a new companion played by actress Varada Sethu.
