It’s widely accepted that wearing the band tee of an artist whose gig you’re at is a bit of a faux-pas. While this might be true in most music circles, the fashion world is an altogether different story. For fashion addicts, clothing is all about pledging your allegiance to a specific subcultural set, and what better way to do that than wearing a head-to-toe full look at your favourite designer’s show?
At London Fashion Week, the attendees of Charles Jeffrey’s 10th anniversary celebrations certainly got the memo. Photographer Yu Fujiwara snapped them all while waiting patiently outside London’s Somerset House, and it really didn’t take him long to spot the LOVERBOY stans.
Jeffrey’s whacky wares were on full display, with guests in warring prints, tartan kilts and voluminous, layered creations. Masked rapper M Huncho pledged his allegiance in a new-season zip-up shawl neck, nightlife legend Princess Julia arrived to the scene in a ruched, navy prairie dress, while Snake Denton of “I’m Snake Denton and this is The Face” fame also turned up in a crimson coat from Jeffrey’s AW24 Moshkirk and Booness collection.
As guests continued to line up outside Greggs waiting for the show, the last decade of Jeffrey’s creative vision was splashed across The Strand for all to see. Those famous chunky eared beanies – a well-worn staple of the creative, artsy scene – of course made several appearances, their ubiquity a signifier of Jeffrey’s success in creating sellable mass products as well as avant garde showstoppers. Planted firmly on heads, they came in leopard, crimson, hot pink and striped variations, and even as little key charms hanging off a couple of attendees’ belt loops.
Elsewhere, a blue alien with four boobs adorned the t-shirt of one lucky guest, Miss Jason went incognito in a black and white striped face mask, while zebra print wellies were spotted down below. And those who weren’t in LOVERBOY were definitely dressed in the spirit, a bunch of rag-tag club kids in faux-fur moon boots, pink pleaser heels and choppy blonde mullets. We all know that Jeffrey’s eponymous label started life as an east London club night, so it’s rewarding to see that the essence of that community still remains after 10 years of success.
