June 20, (THEWILL) – Kylian Mbappe, France’s 25-year-old captain, is expected to be available for their second Euro 2024 group match against the Netherlands, despite breaking his nose in the opening 1-0 victory over Austria. Manager Didier Deschamps confirmed on Thursday, that Mbappe’s condition has improved significantly since the collision with Austria’s Kevin Danso.

Mbappe has been training with a specially made protective mask, which he tried on Thursday. Deschamps remained tight-lipped about the mask’s details, stating: “Kylian Mbappe will be wearing a mask. Yes, you don’t really need to know the details about this mask.” The French team is prepared to make a last-minute decision on Mbappe’s participation, just four days after his injury.

Fellow forward Antoine Griezmann reported that Mbappe’s swelling has reduced but the final decision will depend on how he feels. Griezmann acknowledged that while Mbappe’s presence on the pitch would be significant, the team is prepared to adapt if necessary. “Having one of the best players in the world on the pitch or not definitely changes things,” Griezmann said, “But you always have to adapt to each match.”

Deschamps emphasised that his approach to the game remains unchanged, regardless of Mbappe’s availability. He stressed the importance of managing the entire group, ensuring all players are ready to contribute. “Everyone has to be ready. I don’t think it’s anything special,” Deschamps remarked.

Both France and the Netherlands enter the match with momentum, having won their opening games. The Netherlands staged a comeback to defeat Poland 2-1 in their first match of the tournament. The clash between these two football powerhouses promises to be a crucial encounter in Group D of Euro 2024.
