Plans have been submitted for a new men’s suits shop on Clumber Street. Suit Direct, a designer chain with around 30 locations across the UK, is hoping to move into the street after their store in the Victoria Centre permanently shut earlier this year.
If approved, the proposed menswear store would be built on the former Levi’s site. The building has been vacant since November when the American denim retailer relocated to the Victoria Centre, in a trend which has since seen stores such as H&M move from their city centre sites .

James, 49, of Beeston, said: “It’ll bring in more business which is good but [Clumber Street] is one of those streets where places are always coming and going. The shop doesn’t especially interest me but some people will like it.”
Tara, 23, who lives in Hockley, added: “I’m not personally too bothered about a new suit shop but it’s good that an empty shop is being filled.”
Meanwhile, Ian, 60, said: “I think it’s good to see new businesses opening up and it’s good to see the area come alive again.”
Clumber Street has been notable for its popularity over the years, . However recent times have seen many retailers and restaurants opt to open in the popular Victoria Centre, located opposite the street.
Tara said she believes Clumber Street may be struggling “because it is competing with the Victoria Centre or even Hockley which has more interesting shops”. Meanwhile, Ian added: “It’s a shame to see all the business centred around the Victoria Centre. It makes the place too busy and then leaves other streets a bit dead and empty really.”
In the application, BMB Clothing Ltd – the owners of Suit Direct – requested permission from Nottingham City Council to install a new fascia sign, a non-illuminating logo and a hanging sign. The detailed drawing attached shows the existing building layout with the new proposed shopfront elevation which features Suit Direct signage.
