Arne Slot aims to carry on Jurgen Klopp’s fantastic work at Liverpool by topping last season’s third-place finish.

Klopp signed off after nine years at Anfield with a record 10th Carabao Cup and third spot with 82 points. Slot succeeded Klopp at the start of this month and in his first interview, Liverpool’s new head coach says bettering this is his target.

“Yeah, definitely,” he told Liverpool’s website. “I think 82 points is a result of the playing style. Always the points you get is always a result of the way you play. I’ve seen many games already, I’ve seen many training sessions as well.

“Of course the fans can see the games, so they know we have some very good players. But I’ve also seen a lot of training sessions already and I think this is where you bring the culture, and they’re always working hard.

“A really good team, really good players, managed to be on top for a very long time, but I think in the end we would all love to see Liverpool a bit higher than third place and this is the challenge we’re facing now, to build on from what we have.

“I’ve all the confidence in this because of the players, that we can add a few things and hopefully get a few more points than 82, which is necessary with the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City, to end up hopefully a bit higher than we did this season.”

Slot has brought his coaching team from Feyenoord with him and Liverpool yesterday confirmed Sipke Hulshoff would be his No.2 and Ruben Peeters the first-team lead physical performance coach.

Liverpool have also headhunted Fabian Otte from the USA national team as their goalkeeping coach.
