For Spring/Summer 2008, Ralph Lauren took inspiration to the next level with an entire collection of vintage-inspired racetrack-ready silhouettes. With a backdrop of a busy societal scene, Ralph Lauren sent models down the runway in a plethora of ruffled gowns, wide-brimmed hats and canes accentuated by jockey riffs of jodhpurs and riding jackets; equestrian glamour at its most refined.
In 2012, former Tatler cover star Nicole Kidman attended the Melbourne Derby in a ravishing replica of Eliza Doolittle’s white lace dress. Custom created by A-list stylist and designer L’Wren Scott, the gown featured the same high neck, lace sleeves and, of course, humbug-striped ribbons. At the time Kidman explained her ensemble of choice, ‘My Fair Lady is one of my favourite movies,’ she said, ‘We decided to do something that was fun and a bit different. I’m doing a film about Grace Kelly at the moment, so it’s nice to get dressed up in real life too.’
For the Duchess of Sussex’s first Ascot outing, Meghan Markle channelled Hepburn’s race day regalia, with many discerning fashion fans comparing her look to that of Ms Doolittle. With a little creative licence, the Duchess’s white Givenchy dress and Philip Treacy hat helped create the perfect modern-day My Fair Lady.
