One dead, several wounded in stabbing rampage at German Euros party

A knife attacker killed one person and severely injured two more in a rampage at a Euros party in east Germany before being shot dead by police.

The man entered a garden in the city of Magdeburg where a family were hosting a private party to watch Germany’s opening match against Scotland.

Inside the garden, the attacker stabbed at least three football fans. Two suffered severe wounds.

After he attempted to attack police who turned up at the scene, an officer fatally shot him, German daily Bild reported.

The man is also suspected of killing another man in a high-rise building near the location of the attack before going on his rampage.

He then threatened people at a small garden colony, who managed to alert the police.

It is unclear whether the attack is being treated as a possible terrorism incident.

Germany has been on high alert about the possibility of terror attacks during the coming four weeks of football festivities.

In March, Berlin announced that it would be carrying out checks on all its borders to prevent possible terror attacks.

German interior minister Nancy Faeser said: “We are arming ourselves against all conceivable dangers with the maximum commitment of the security authorities.

“Our focus ranges from the threat of Islamist terror to hooligans and cyber attacks. The Federal Police will protect Germany’s borders, airports and rail traffic,” she stated

Germany has suffered a sharp rise in knife crime recently.

Earlier this month, a radicalised asylum seeker from Afghanistan attacked and killed a policeman in the city of Mannheim after the officer tried to prevent him from attacking people on the street.
