SMS plc, the integrated energy infrastructure group, has appointed Eugenio Herrero as the Managing Director of its Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Infrastructure division.

Eugenio brings a wealth of experience in the EV charging infrastructure industry. Recently, he held the position of Executive Director of ultra-rapid electric vehicle (EV) charging network, PoGo Charge, and of SWARCO Smart Charging’s investment division, where he led the incubation, development and growth of the business. Prior to his role at PoGo, he managed the launch of the Be.EV network in Manchester, UK.

Eugenio has also held several commercial and development positions for infrastructure and energy projects at Amey Investments, Ferrovial Agroman and Abengoa Engineering and Construction, both in the UK and overseas.

In his new role at SMS, beginning on 12th September 2023, Eugenio will lead the growth of the Group’s recently launched public EV charging infrastructure business, which delivers end-to-end charging solutions covering the destination, on-street, fleet, workplace and charging hub segments of the market.

Through these propositions, SMS is working closely with UK landowners and property developers, retail, leisure and hospitality businesses, and other private and public sector organisations to help establish the c.300,000 EV chargepoints that are expected to be needed by 2030 in order to keep pace with rising EV demand.

Recently, SMS released a whitepaper looking at the current state of public EV charging in the UK – having surveyed the opinions of 1,000 UK EV drivers – as well as providing a blueprint for how to go about addressing the gaps and seizing the opportunities of EV charging infrastructure.
