Supermarkets issue huge sandwich recall over possible E.Coli contamination

Must read

Thousands of sandwiches, wraps and salads are being recalled from the UK’s biggest supermarkets over a possible E.Coli outbreak.

Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, Aldi, Boots, Sainsbury’s, One Stop and the Co-op are among the chains recalling a host of food products made by firms Greencore and Samworth Brothers Manton Wood.

Amazon has also said it is recalling products sold on its site.

The UK’s Food Standards Agency said no E.Coli had been found in Greencore’s sandwiches, wraps or salads but the company is taking the steps as a precaution.

A spokesperson for Greencore said: “As a precautionary measure, we have voluntarily recalled a number of sandwiches and wraps due to a potential food safety risk.

“Greencore adheres to the highest standards of food safety, and we are working closely with the Food Standards Agency and our suppliers to better understand the possible source of any potential issue.”

Andrew Opie, Director of Food & Sustainability at the BRC, said: “Food safety is the highest priority for our members and those who sell or prepare food are well-versed in food safety measures.

“Following investigations by the FSA and UKHSA regulators, a number of manufacturers in the supply chain are taking precautionary measures and issuing a recall notice for a small number of products.

“Retailers affected are taking swift action to remove these products from sale and are working closely with the Food Standards Agency to take any further action needed to minimise risk to their customers.”

A spokesperson for Asda said: “We have been made aware by Greencore, who supply Asda and other retailers with pre-packed sandwiches, that they are recalling a number of products as a precaution because of the possible presence of E.coli.

“The full list of products is available on the Asda Product Recalls webpage.

“If you have purchased any of these products, do not eat them, please bring them back to your nearest store where you will be given a full refund.

“You do not need your receipt.”

It comes after a nationwide outbreak of E.coli led to dozens of people being hospitalized, with 13 recorded cases in Scotland alone.

Half of the affected patients in Scotland have been admitted to hospital since the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) identified what it believes to be a “single outbreak” on May 25.

While experts said it is “most likely” the outbreak can be linked to food distributed nationally, investigations are under way by public health bodies to identify the source.
