An enormous fire has engulfed a car wrecking yard located close to a busy airport in Sydney‘s south-west.

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) first received reports of the fire at 2.10pm on Tuesday afternoon.

There are more than 20 fire crews on the scene, including three multiple specialist Aerial Pumpers with 24metre ladders.

It is not yet known if anyone was hurt, but paramedics were on scene at about 2.30pm.

‘That looks bad, I hope everybody got out,’ a witness can be heard saying in a video obtained by 7News.

‘All that water he just put on there doesn’t look like it did anything.’

Firefighters said from the scene their challenge was ‘not only knocking the fire down but stopping the spread’.

‘Fires at wrecking yards can burn extremely hot and fast,’ FRNSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry said.

‘The extreme heat and potential to spread rapidly can make these types of fires difficult to contain.

‘Our firefighters are working to tackle the fire and ensure that all people are accounted for.’

The fire location is very close to Bankstown Airport and planes are still flying past.

The airport caters for charter and private business flights, freight, aeromedical services, aircraft maintenance businesses, emergency services and flying schools.

The NSW Police said Fitzpatrick St and Milperra Road are closed due to the fire.

People in the area are urged to stay indoors and keep their windows closed due to the smoke.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

More to come.
