Charles Leclerc, the winner of the last race in Monaco, was fourth for Ferrari, having been the only driver inside the top 10 to set his quickest time on medium tyres.

Daniel Ricciardo was fifth for RB, marginally in front of Kevin Magnussen with Lewis Hamilton, Yuki Tsunoda, Alex Albon and Sergio Perez.

There was no place in the top 10 for World Championship leader Max Verstappen, who suffered an ERS issue on his Red Bull RB20.

The three-time World Champion ended the session 18th, ahead only of Pierre Gasly’s Alpine and FP1 pace-setter Lando Norris of McLaren.

After wet conditions caused a delay for the on-track action in FP1, FP2 turned out to be a session of two halves as the first half of the session took place in the dry before the arrival of a mid-session shower.

With the slippery conditions expected to be a theme of this weekend, a number of drivers took the opportunity to get a feel for the car in the wet, though none were able to trouble the fastest times at the start of the session.

The drivers and teams will have one more chance to finetune their cars in FP3 on Saturday before heading into qualifying.

The race will be held at 1400 on Sunday and is scheduled to last 70 laps.
