Liverpool’s dream goalkeeper scenario after Kelleher exit

Must read

Liverpool could be set to lose second-choice goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher this summer.

The Republic of Ireland international, who made 26 appearances in all competitions for the Reds during the 2023/24 season, is considering a move away in search of regular first-team action. Kelleher stepped in and made ten Premier League appearances when Alisson was not available, while playing in each of their six Carabao Cup matches including the final as they beat Chelsea to lift the trophy at Wembley.

Arguably, Kelleher is one of the best No.2s in England alongside Aaron Ramsdale and Stefan Ortega – but he does no longer want to settle for being second fiddle. Kelleher is keen to become the main man somewhere else and has been linked with a move to Celtic, Brentford and a number of other clubs.

If Liverpool lose Kelleher, who is valued at around £15million, then new Reds boss Arne Slot will have to go out and sign another shot-stopper to join Alisson and Adrian in the goalkeeping department. Although Adrian is out of contract later this month, Liverpool have offered him a new one-year deal and hope he will stay, while other ‘keepers Jacob Poytress and Reece Truema have also been handed fresh terms.

Sunderland’s Anthony Patterson is among those linked with a move to replace Kelleher at Anfield this summer. Patterson has a wealth of EFL experience under his belt since coming through the ranks at the Black Cats, missing just one Championship game over the course of the last two years.

He is looking like the best and most ideal fit to come in and compete with Alisson for the first-choice jersey, potentially with a view of replacing the Brazilian in the future. At 24 years of age, Patterson has age on his side and has the capabilities to grow and improve into a Premier League goalkeeper.
