Kate Garraway faced backlash today (June 6) as she left the Good Morning Britain studio to report on the 80th anniversary of D-Day – Leaving fans fuming.
The ITV presenter was at Ver-Sur-Mer as she described her experience of walking in the footsteps of those who fought on D-Day. Commemorations were underway in Normandy to mark the day’s 80th anniversary.
Kate showed the field behind her, with silhouettes to represent more than 1,000 soldiers who lost their lives. She then moved on to show a large stone structure as she explained: “It’s very moving as well for me to be here because I was here five years ago for the 75th anniversary when this stone was laid – The first stone of the British memorial.”
She explained a bit about what the stone was for as it commemorated and remembered those who lost their lives in the war. But midway through her explanation, Kate began to cough.
She excused herself as she tried to carry on but her voice became strained in places and she began to cough once more. The presenter, who was dressed in a lovely red coat, added: “Excuse me, I’ve got some pollen in my mouth sorry.” Kate held her chest as she tried to continue with her segment.
While Kate tried to keep her composition, fans watching at home took to social media to complain about her presenting skills, with some even threatening to “switch off”.
One user, who posted to X (formerly Twitter) said: “Kate is painful to watch poor poor broadcaster #GMB”
Another added: “So sorry but I have had to turn over… Kate is just awful”. A third person wrote: “Had to switch over. She is just cringe to watch. BBC showing more respect.”
Meanwhile, someone else posted: “Why did Kate feel the need to wear such a ‘look at me’ coat and why can’t she just shut up and let others speak, even when she is letting them speak she’s murmuring loudly. Useless presenting.”
While many were left disgruntled, others filled the ITV breakfast show with praise. One commended the programme as they wrote: “Great to see Kate covering the D-Day landings from Normandy.”
Another poster added: “Watching and hearing the veterans is deeply moving. Hopefully D-Day will be remembered and honoured by future generations.”
