Jadon Sancho played the final game of his second spell with Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, with the German giants falling short in the Champions League final at Wembley
Jadon Sancho has thanked Borussia Dortmund for welcoming him back as his loan spell with the club comes to an end.
The Manchester United forward spent the second half of the season back with his former side, having been ostracised at Old Trafford following a falling out with Erik ten Hag. Sancho rediscovered his best form back in Germany and helped Dortmund to an unlikely Champions League final.
The 2-0 defeat to Real Madrid at Wembley marked the final game of his temporary arrangement, with the 24-year-old’s future now expected to be one of the major topics of the summer window. Mirror Football understands that Sancho, signed by United for £73million in 2021, would be open to rebuilding his career in Manchester, on the proviso Ten Hag is moved on this summer.
But for now, Sancho is firmly focused on paying tribute to Dortmund, releasing a heartfelt statement to the club and their supporters following Saturday’s showpiece in London. “What a crazy 6 months @bvb09,” he posted on social media.
“We win together we lose together, these moments only make us stronger! I’m so grateful to be apart of such an amazing group of players!
“I want to congratulate Real Madrid on winning the Champions League. We came up short on the night, but we should be super proud of ourselves. We are a family and these moments won’t break us! Thank you to everybody who came out to support us on such a special day!
“@BVB I want to thank everyone involved at such an amazing club. I can’t thank you enough for welcoming me back the way you all have during these last 6 months.
“Thank you to Edin Terzić, Sebastian Kehl and Hans-Joachim Watzke for believing in me and bringing me back. Finally a special thank you to the BVB fans. Your support is amazing and I’m forever thankful for you all!”
It is understood that Dortmund want to bring Sancho back to the club permanently, but United’s price tag of more than £50million is almost certain to be a prohibitive one. That could see him returning to the Red Devils for the new season, although there is an acknowledgement that would be unlikely with Ten Hag in charge.
The pair were at the centre of a public row in September of last year when Ten Hag claimed the forward was dropped from the squad thanks to poor training performances. Sancho hit back on social media claiming he was being made a ‘scapegoat’ by the under-pressure head coach.
He failed to make another appearance for United before being loaned out in the January window. Ten Hag has recently suggested that his positive performances back at Dortmund were good in terms of keeping his value high.
However, it remains to be seen whether Ten Hag will still be the man making personnel decisions at Old Trafford, with United chief Jim Ratcliffe conducting a review of his performances. The Dutchman made the decision a little more difficult by lifting the FA Cup, but their worst ever Premier League season means his future is far from assured.
The likes of Mauricio Pochettino, Thomas Tuchel and Thomas Frank have all be touted as potential replacements, should Ratcliffe decide to move on from the ex-Ajax coach. That could yet open the door for a Sancho return after reminding people why United spent so much to bring him to the club in the first place.
