The trip was organised by the Real Madrid supporter’s club Capote y Montera, with the organisation chartering a flight through a travel agency.

Fans reportedly paid €1,095 (£930) for a round trip, with the flight due to land at East Midlands Airport at 7am on Saturday.

Supporters would then have been taken to Wembley on a coach.

Nabil Alturek Arnaiz, president of Capote y Montera, told Spanish outlet Revelo that the travel agency had blamed a ‘maintenance problem’.

‘They notified us yesterday, around five in the afternoon, that the plane could not fly due to a maintenance problem,’ he said.

‘They have not given us more details. I have not slept a wink all night.

‘I wouldn’t wish this on anyone. It’s been horrible. My agency has been ruined and this is going to hurt me a lot.’
