It comes after the hospitality business, which also runs Premier Inn hotels, confirmed plans to convert 112 of its low-performing restaurants into hotel facilities instead.

The company said these 112 restaurants generated a loss of £19million before tax in the last financial year.

However, a spokesperson for the restaurant company said the plans to axe the Beefeater in Rainham is subject to consultation and the site is still currently open and trading.

Of the current Whitbread branches up for sale, 21 have also been sold for £28 million.

Back in April, the company said the new plans would result in the loss of 1,500 jobs from its workforce of 37,000.

Earlier this month the Long Reach Beefeater in Whitstable and the Table Table in Broomfield, Herne Bay were also earmarked for closure by the same company.

However, a spokesperson added: “We recognise that this will be unsettling for our team members and we are providing them with dedicated support.

“We are committed to working hard to enable as many as possible of our affected team members to stay with us by either transferring into new roles, or by taking up other vacancies across the business more broadly through our existing recruitment activity.”
