A far-Right activist who compared Islam to fascism is believed to have been stabbed in a knife attack by a man who was shot by police in Mannheim, south-west Germany.
Bystanders stepped in to try to stop the knifeman but he broke free and stabbed a police officer in the back before being shot by another officer.
The unidentified attacker’s first victim was reported to be Michael Stürzenberger. The 59-year-old is known for his anti-Islamic views.
Dramatic footage of the attack shared on social media showed the attacker, a bearded man with glasses, attacking another man close to a van and posters for the demonstration in the square. As people run to help, the man attempts to get away from his attacker but is pursued and stabbed.
Both men fall to the ground, where the knifeman continues his assault, appearing to stab his victim in the body and leg. More bystanders run to help and the attacker lashes out at them with his blade, while people shout to take the knife from him.
