Off-peak Friday fares: Trial on London transport ends

Must read

A scheme trialling off-peak fares all day on Fridays on the Transport for London (TfL) network is ending.

City Hall introduced the three-month trial in March with the aim of attracting workers into the office and to boost the hospitality and cultural sectors.

Friday marks the final day of the trial, which applied to the London Underground, Docklands Light Railway (DLR), London Overground, Elizabeth line, and some National Rail services across London and the southeast. Bus services already have a flat fare.

Data gathered during the trial would be used to inform future decisions on fares, TfL said.

Peak fares ordinarily apply between 06:30 and 09:30 and between 16:00 and 19:00 on both TfL and National Rail services.

A TfL spokesperson said that during the trial the daily cap on contactless and Oyster had been amended to cap fares at an off-peak rate on Fridays, helping those who make multiple journeys.

Alex Williams, chief customer and strategy officer at TfL, said: “Analysis of the trial is ongoing”.

He added it would “help us to better understand how targeted initiatives like this could help encourage more people back onto public transport and into London on a day that is currently quieter than midweek days”.
