All travellers are being urged to avoid a major route between England and Scotland after a freight train derailed on Wednesday evening on the West Coast Main Line, between Carlisle and Oxenholme Lake District.
The incident is causing considerable disruptions, with many services being delayed or cancelled, according to National Rail Enquiries.
With some lines completely blocked and limited service available on others, Avanti West Coast and TransPennine Express have both issued “do not travel” alerts for anyone intending to venture between Preston and Scotland today.
In light of these unprecedented disruptions, ticket holders can postpone their journeys until Friday or opt to use other operators.
Network Rail has been contacted for comment.
