Erik ten Hag has an uncertain future at Manchester United but Jim Ratcliffe is yet to share any decision over whether he will stay at Old Trafford beyond the summer and into next season
Ex-Manchester United star Gerard Pique has told Jim Ratcliffe the decision over Erik ten Hag’s future must be made with the long-term in mind.
The Dutchman’s future remains on a knife edge at Old Trafford. There were reports that he could be sacked regardless of the result in the FA Cup final.
Man United lifted the trophy in the end, but no decision has been announced over whether Ten Hag will stay or not. And now former Red Devils defender Pique has instructed Ratcliffe to make up his mind so planning for next season can get underway sooner rather than later.
Speaking to talkSPORT, he said: “I think that the board of United really needs to understand what they want for the club in the next few years and really if they believe in Ten Hag or not.
“They need to make the decision. Well, it’s tough to say really [if he should leave or not] because it’s true that they won the cup.
“At the same time, it’s also true that they are not fighting for the Premier League which I think at some point, has to be one of the objectives of Manchester United.”
Ten Hag has just a year remaining on his contract at Old Trafford. While a decision has yet to be made on his future, replacements have already been sounded out.
Kieran McKenna emerged as an early contender but has opted to sign a new contract with Ipswich. Ex-Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi has since been in contact regarding a move to Old Trafford.

While Pique has urged for a decision, fellow former Red Devil Teddy Sheringham is pretty clear on what should happen. He has told Ratcliffe that Ten Hag should be sacked for masterminding Man United’s worst-ever Premier League season.
As quoted by Sky Sports, he said: “The owners, the people in charge, have got to have a look at the situation and say, is that good enough for Manchester United?
“It’s a fantastic end to the season, no doubt, and fully deserved, and I love the way he’s brushed things off that if Manchester United don’t want me, I’ll go and win trophies elsewhere.
“But at the same time you look at where they’ve finished, I think it was 14 defeats during the season, it’s not good enough for Manchester United. They need to be in the top two or three pushing to win the league and at the moment, they’re nowhere near it.”
