With so many diet plans on the market, slimmers may not know which will work best for them.

Speaking exclusively to GB News, a doctor shared why it is certain types of foods, rather than certain diet plans, that will make a huge impact when trying to burn fat.

Choosing meals packed with protein and fibre can help with weight loss as they will keep dieters feeling fuller for longer, fitness and nutrition advisor at Fortune Recommends Health Dr Chris Mohr said.

He told GB News: “Prioritising protein and fibre is important when trying to lose weight because they keep you fuller for longer.”

Opt for natural proteins such as meats, fish, nuts, legumes and seeds. These are often great for weight loss and full of other essential nutrients.

Dr Mohn continued: “Some examples include lean proteins like chicken, turkey and pork along with all the veggies and fruit because the protein helps with muscle repair and the fibre is amazing for your health and helps fill you up.

“Fish, such as salmon is also a great protein-rich option because it is loaded with omega-3 fatty acids that promote heart health and improve overall health.”

It’s not just animal sources of protein, however, legumes, including beans and lentils, are actually the perfect combination of both protein and fibre.

“This makes them a solid choice for weight control and overall health. In fact, if there was an award for ‘best all-around food’ legumes would certainly top the list.”

Not only will high protein foods keep you feeling full, protein has been found to have a higher thermic effect of food than carbs and fat.

This is figure relates to how many calories are used when digesting and metabolising the foods.

Protein’s rate being higher means more calorie are burned will digesting, with some studies claiming it is up to 30 per cent of the calories from protein.

There is much conversation around whether eating at a certain time can impact weight loss results with plans such as intermittent fasting promoting time-restricted eating.

While there is evidence that this can impact weight loss, Dr Mohr suggested consistency and calories are the biggest factors when trying to achieve a transformation.

He said: “There’s no one-size-fits-all answer regarding the best eating times for weight loss.

“Overall calories are what matter, though most people would feel best if they spread those calories out a little more evenly throughout the day.”
