Rethinking the Thinking Jobs by Payal Dhar – A review

Must read

The Article “Rethinking the Thinking Jobs” by Payal Dhar has explicitly explained how Artificial Intelligence (AI) has played a key role in different fields of humanity. It has been incorporated in the sectors of Finance and Banking, Law, Engineering, Architecture, Scientific Research and Development, Software Development, and Human Resource.

Without a doubt, AI can provide extensive efficiency in the field of managing huge chunks of data, recruitment of employees, locating for a potential employee, and can make human life much easier. It is evident to be less time-consuming and more productive. On the other hand, in my opinion, I believe as much as AI has its pros, it has its cons and that means the loss of data, potential risk of hacking, more jobs and income loss, and an increase in human laziness.

Literature Review

The author exclaims that workers with a degree in Masters and Doctorate could potentially see that AI could perform 57% of their tasks while for Bachelor tasks about 60% of the work can be performed by AI (Report by McKinsey and Company in June 2023). The author mentions that CitiBank CEO Jane Fraser believes in the fact that the risk of incorporating AI in its activities is essential rather than not engaging with it. Generative AI can drastically improve productivity by revolutionizing all functions in the banking industry. A key mention here is that of Ally.ai which is connecting ChatGPT 3.5 with bank’s data, security and other internal operations. However, this may be quite efficient and productive, but it may result in privacy and data risk such as potential for hacking.

AI can help in rethinking the thinking jobs by providing a platform where humans can use software to perform tasks. According to an article by Lyssa Test namely “Rethinking Artificial Intelligence’s Role in Human Resources.” She highlights that AI can revolutionize HR efforts no matter the size of the organization. She mentions four important parameters; a) AI processes large quantities of data, b) Eliminates Human Bias, c) Assesses Employee Performance, and d) Answers Employee Inquiries. Under each segment, the author mentions that AI can help sifting through large resumes/CV’s and can locate potential candidates for a particular job (Test 2024). It helps HR professionals in eliminating hours of time-consuming barrage for candidate applications. Moreover, AI can eliminate human biasness that can be factors for influencing decision making by human tendencies of compassion and similarities. It is detached from any effects of personality, gender, race or ethnicity. In addition, can help keep track of employee performance and establish a grading system that can provide a brief overview of the HR department.

In another article “Rethinking Productivity in the Age of AI” by Kate Bravery, According to Mercer’s Global Talent Trends 2024, 3 out of 5 executives (63%) want to cut jobs and not people in the age of AI. AI has the potential to liberate humans from repetitive tasks, redefine the relationship between work, leisure and personal growth. It provides a broader perspective beyond the traditional work structure and embraces engagements in activities that foster societal contributions. (Bravery 2024)

Discussion

As discussed earlier, AI can prove to be a milestone for organizations and humans as it can help ease out tasks and avoid mundane activities. AI can recognize patterns that are not apparent to humans, develop hypotheses and stimulate experiments that are performed over networks by robots. In the sector of Software Development, there is an easy way to detect threats and generate passwords. However, amidst all the pros, AI can have its loopholes which account for data compromise, ownership and privacy.

In the original article of this review, Engineering department have been managing production on identifying patterns to improve efficiency and upgrade transportation routes such as the BMW industry that uses specific generative AI to reduce weight and maintain stability of their vehicles. Moreover, Microsoft uses chatbots to share technical information and gives access to data upon request. (Dhar 2024)

In the field of Architecture, drafting, creating 3-D models and site planning can help conceptualize interiors. A single app/architect can achieve data as much as five architects within a short span of time. It can contribute to the automation of entire design package.

Conclusion

To conclude, AI is an efficient tool in different fields to facilitate humankind. It provides more organizing of big chunks of data and help sifting through it for optimization of goals. However, in my opinion, AI is a double-edged sword as it is based on certain algorithms. It may prove to be discriminatory or unfair treatment in the workplace. AI systems often rely on vast amounts of data which is crucial as it propagates to ethical concerns. It can create a gap between skilled employees and employers since there will be a need for improved skill while contributing to unemployment. Lastly, AI can be analyzed with the event of time whether it is a contributing element for efficiency (for some) or as a substitute for some.
