The UEFA Champions League continues to be a global phenomenon and with it comes a surge in travel demand for key fixtures.Â
Fans have travelled from all corners of the globe during the 2023-24 season to watch some of Europe’s best teams battle it out on the biggest stage.Â
Now, ahead of the competition’s showpiece event between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund on June 1st, Expedia have conducted a study to see which games caused the biggest travel demand this season and the results are surprising.
Out of the 125 fixtures, the quarter-final clash between Barcelona and PSG – hosted at the Nou Camp – has caused a staggering 360% increase in travel interest.Â
This highly anticipated rematch, which the Catalan side lost 4-1 – was fuelled by past rivalries and superstar players and was clearly a magnet for passionate fans.

Man United’s away defeat to Copenhagen caused a 230 per cent increase in travel bookings
Following closely behind is another PSG fixture, this time against Borussia Dortmund in the group stage.Â
The clash at the Signal Iduna Park has generated a 260 per cent increase in travel demand, highlighting the allure of witnessing the French giants take on the passionate Yellow Wall.
Manchester United are the first English side to feature on the list – with their group stage clash against FC Copenhagen sparking a 230 per cent rise in travel interest.
Those who did make the journey were treated to a thriller as the Danish side struck in injury time to secure a 4-3 win over Erik ten Hag’s Red Devils.Â
The data further reveals a strong demand for Italian clubs, with Barcelona’s round-of-16 matchup against Napoli driving a 225 per cent increase in travel bookings.Â
Similarly, Dortmund’s group stage clash against AC Milan generating a significant 185 per cent rise in travel interest.
Interestingly, some surprise packages emerged. Feyenoord’s group stage clash with Celtic FC in Rotterdam has seen a 205 per cent increase in travel demand, indicating a strong desire to witness these historic clubs battle it out.
The trend continues with Real Sociedad’s round-of-16 matchup against PSG, which generated a 200 per cent increase in travel bookings.Â
Even teams outside the traditional powerhouses attracted further demand. BSC Young Boys’ group stage encounter against Manchester City in Bern saw a 160 per cent increase in travel demand, highlighting the appeal of witnessing a potential underdog story unfold.
Finally, Copenhagen’s clash with Bayern Munich in the group stage has helped drive a 130 per cent increase in travel demand.Â
This data paints a clear picture: the UEFA Champions League isn’t just a battle for on-pitch glory, but also a major driver of travel and tourism.Â
Fans are eager to experience the electric atmospheres and witness the world’s best players, stadiums and cities for the action.
Speaking about the study, Michele Rousseau from Expedia said: ‘If European football fans have taught us anything this season, it’s that Dortmund and Copenhagen need adding to your travel wish list.Â
