We’re drawing ever closer to the launch of the RTX 50 series, which is expected to be announced at CES next week. While many will be looking forward to the announcement of Nvidia’s new desktop graphics cards, there are also laptop GPUs to think about.
Ahead of the holidays last year, RTX 5090 gaming laptops appeared online, suggesting that the flagship laptop GPU would be cut down to just 16GB of VRAM, half of what is expected from the desktop variant. However, a new leak now provides a closer look at what to expect from the next-gen laptops, with up to 24GB GDDR7 memory reportedly possible.
RTX 5090 laptop could feature up to 24GB of VRAM
According to a well-known leaker, posting on the Chinese social media platform Weibo, 3GB GDDR7 modules may feature in the upcoming flagship RTX 5090 laptop GPU. This will reportedly allow the card to achieve up to 24GB of memory – this helps mitigate the problem of cut-down memory on laptop GPUs. For reference, the current 4090 laptops are limited to 16GB. The new GDDR7 memory should provide a boost to performance, opening up higher bandwidth.
In addition to the information pictured above, it has been noted that the flagship gaming laptops are expected to launch some time to February. This likely encapsulates both the 5090 and 5080 models, though details of both the specs and release dates are yet to be officially announced by Nvidia and its partners.
The topic of VRAM has been pretty interesting lately, especially with more AAA titles starting to bottleneck those working with something like 8GB – the new Indiana Jones game has been a good example of this. In any case, this will be no issue for those with high-end hardware like the 5090, and even those gaming on a laptop will be happy to see uplift in the memory department.
