James Corden has confirmed that Gavin and Stacey “can’t carry on” beyond the upcoming Christmas special.

The hit sitcom returns to BBC One and iPlayer on Christmas Day at 9pm for a brand new festive episode, which will serve as its finale.

While it was previously confirmed that this will mark Gavin & Stacey‘s final-ever episode, fans had still been holding out hope for a possible return in future.

However, Corden has now shut down the possibility, teasing that the finale ends in such a way that the show couldn’t continue.

“It can’t carry on after this,” he said during a recent appearance on BBC Breakfast. “We can’t see a way how it could, you’ll have to wait and see!”

Corden, who co-created the series alongside Ruth Jones and stars in it as Smithy, also gave some details on the Christmas special’s setting.

“I can tell you it isn’t set at Christmas,” he shared. “So we felt we’ve done two Christmas Day specials… we’ve done a Christmas in Essex and a Christmas in Barry. The story is set after where the last one left off.”

Meanwhile, Mick actor Larry Lamb recently said that watching the final episode was “the ultimate emotional rollercoaster”.

“[We’ve] been the same… poleaxed, completely exhausted [since we watched it],” he said on The One Show. “The absolute, ultimate emotional rollercoaster. You’re up, you’re down, you’re on, you’re standing still.”

The star also praised Corden and Jones’ writing, adding: “It’s quite extraordinary. It’s the most amazing piece of writing. Amazing. So clever.”

Gavin & Stacey series 1-3 are available to stream on BBC iPlayer. The Gavin & Stacey 2024 Christmas special will air at 9pm on Christmas Day on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
