How to unlock the Fortnite Master Chief matte black skin

Must read

If you were excited about Master Chief returning to Fortnite and getting your hands on the unique matte black style, we have some bad news.

Skins like Master Chief are highly coveted by fans, as they rarely return to the Fortnite Item Shop, giving them an aura of exclusivity. In the case of Master Chief, the matte black style is even harder to get.

In fact, if you were looking to buy the Master Chief just for the matte black style, you’d better think again.

Can you get the matte black Master Chief skin in Fortnite?

The answer, to put it bluntly, is no. The exclusive matte black Master Chief style is not obtainable, despite Epic Games saying it would always be available.

No matte black skin for new Master Chief owners

On December 23, the Fortnite Status X (formerly Twitter) account made an amendment to a message from December 2020. The original post stated that players could unlock the Master Chief “matte black style if you play a match on Xbox Series X|S at ANY point in the future.”

Adding: “There is no time limit for unlocking the style.” That, as players sadly found out, was a lie.

The new message reads: “The Matte Black style for The Master Chief is no longer unlockable. This style is limited to players who purchased the outfit and played on an Xbox Series X|S prior to December 2024.”

Sadly, despite Epic Games trying to make exclusive items more widely available, the matte black Master Chief will remain a hot commodity that only OG Fortnite players can boast to have in their collections.

Don’t feel too bad, however, as there are still plenty of skins and cosmetics to grind during Chapter 6 Season 1. For instance, we recommend you check out everything we know about the upcoming Godzilla skin, so you’re ready when it launches.
