Gavin & Stacey star James Corden has shared a definitive six-word comment as he appeared to confirm the show’s future during a BBC Breakfast appearance on Tuesday

James Corden has spilled the beans about the fate of hit sitcom Gavin and Stacey in a chat on BBC Breakfast.

Catching up with the cast in a pre-recorded chat, James, 46, who plays the beloved Smithy and also co-created the hit series alongside Ruth Jones, teased details.

Reflecting on filming the finale, the actor shared his mixed emotions as he admitted: “On one level, it’s amazing and it’s so joyous. Every day has just been so great and then you’ve got this overwhelming feeling that hits you, well, hits me, every couple of hours where you start going: ‘Oh God, we’re not going to be doing this again!'”

Then, dropping a six-word bombshell, he added: “It can’t carry on after this”, and teased further: “We can’t see a way how it could, you’ll have to wait and see!”

During the insightful interview, James also spilled some details on the setting of the much-anticipated special, explaining: “I can tell you it isn’t set at Christmas. So we felt we’ve done two Christmas Day specials… we’ve done a Christmas in Essex and a Christmas in Barry. The story is set after where the last one left off.”

For those worried about time-bending twists, he clarified: “In the timeline of history, it is set after that moment, there’s no time jumping, we’re not going back in time.”

The chat comes as stars of the show have been opening up about the Christmas special, which might just be the last time we visit our favourite characters from the series, reports Wales Online.

During her chat on Lorraine, Ruth Jones dished some tantalising spoilers about the upcoming final episode, set to hit screens on December 25. Just days before the hotly-anticipated climax of the series, she teased viewers on December 20 by saying “people will understand why it is the last episode” after watching it.

Ruth was tight-lipped but gave a decisive nod when pressed: “Is it the last one?”, answering with: “Well, yeah. It has to be. When you see it you’ll understand why.”

Gavin and Stacey, which first graced our televisions back in 2007 on BBC Three, is bowing out after three seasons and a total of 20 episodes.

The original cast all return for the finale, including Uncle Bryn and Jason, making it the final chance for some burning questions to finally be answered.

Gavin & Stacey airs on Christmas Day at 9pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

BBC Breakfast continues each day at 6am on both BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
